What To Do About Ice Dams

Written by Excelsior Realty Team | Feb 14, 2023 7:37:56 PM

Ice dams can cause substantial damage to your roof, gutter system, ceilings, and walls. When we have heavy snowfall followed by melting, freezing, and more snowfall, it builds up in your gutter systems and up your roof. This is dangerous for a number of reasons:

  • Ice dams can fall and injure pets, children, and people.
  • When ice dams are formed, the heat from your house will cause them to melt against your roof, which can cause seepage into your ceiling and walls.
  • Water damage can be costly to repair, and can cause more serious issues such as mold and mildew.

How do you prevent ice dams?

  • Swap out incandescent and halogen bulbs for LED bulbs so less heat will be generated.
  • Sun melt is unavoidable - including a water-impermeable membrane under the shingles at bottom edge won't stop the dam but it will stop the damage.
  • Move any ventilation equipment out of the attic.
  • Use a roof rake to clear snow to avoid buildup.
  • Hire a professional to remove existing dams.

If you need help finding a professional to remove ice dams, give us a call and we can connect you with a professional in your area. Be very careful if you choose to remove them yourself, as they can hurt you, your gutters, and potentially cause you to fall. Please use caution. Stay safe this winter season and we hope this helps!
