It's time to get outside and get your home exterior refreshed! If you are planning to sell your home this spring or summer, even just a few to do items can go a long way to enhance your home’s curb appeal. We aren't talking perfectly manicured lawns and trimmed trees, just little updates and refreshers that can make a big impact.
- Pick up branches and other debris that may have made it's way onto your lawn, walkways or garden beds.
- Sweep your walkways, sidewalks, steps and porches.
- Use a pressure washer to clear dirt, salt and cobwebs off walkways, driveways and even your siding. (But don't set the pressure washer too high or you'll potentially damage the surfaces.)
- Patch minor cracks in your driveway. Reseal the asphalt if necessary.
- Using a garden claw, gently "till" the soil around your perennials to give them a refresh. Spread a garden weed control mix and then top with fresh mulch.
- Clean window screens and repair any holes.
- Fill windowsill gaps or cracks with fillers and sand down any peeling paint. Refresh with a new coat of paint.
- Wash windows, inside and out. Inside: dilute dishwashing liquid in a bucket of water and gently wash each pane. Use a squeegee to wipe the windows down, using a lint-free rag to wipe the squeegee clean after each stroke. Outside: spray windows with your garden house. Dilute a small amount of vinegar and dishwashing liquid in a bucket of warm water. Use a sponge to wipe down each pane and then rinse.
- Give your front door a new look. Choose a bold paint color and liven it up, or go with just a refreshed coat of your current color. Polish the door hardware or replace with new options.
- Get a new welcome mat.
- Replace front door and garage lighting with updated versions. Or use what you have: give them a good cleaning and spray paint them to give them a new look.
- Give your lawn a good grooming. Rake up any dead grass. Mow on a dry day and remove any clippings. Apply fertilizer or a weed-n-feed treatment when rain is expected to fall soon.
- Plant annuals in your gardens or in pots to bring lots of color to your exterior. Choose flowers like pansies, poppies, cosmos, marigolds or forget-me-nots. Or take a short cut and buy pre-potted hanging plants or planters.
